The ironic part was that he warned himself each time he climbed onto the roof to keep an eye out for nests; he had gotten the bug bomb just in case. But this morning the stillness and peace had been so complete that his watchfulness had lapsed.
I feel like the forshadows the rest of the book. The seens of peace is masking the looming danger that is face by the family. Jack and Wendy are drowing in the calmness, unaware of the darkness and uneasyness felt by Danny.

-but instead of letting sunlight, that sound let in the clouds of shame and remorse, the sound of terror, the agonizing convulsion of the spirit.
When Jack hurt Danny, it caused the adverse reaction, but it caused the same results. The errors of his ways should have shone and he would change. But he went into a depression like state, the a result of failing marrige, achohl abuse, and now the pian he caused to his son. This dark state is what cause the change, not really his willingness to change.
